The Communications Technician is responsible for the planning, layout and complete installation of new and retrofit communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. This includes conducting site surveys, pulling wire and cable and terminating and testing copper and optical cable to the highest level of specifications.
Responsible for, but not limited to:
Installation of video and data cable Cat 6 as well as fiber cable.
Terminating, testing, troubleshooting of horizontal copper (Cat 5, Cat 6).
Termination of fiber.
Termination of riser cable.
Installation of patch panels.
Label and test horizontal cable.
Installation of backbone and riser cable (copper & fiber).
Read and understand plans and specifications.
Installation of plywood and racks.
Installation of cable trays in TC, MDF, IDF.
Assist in OSP (outside plant) installations.
Pulling cable 100 pair or smaller unassisted.
Installing prefab assembly unassisted.
Assisting in Site Grounding.
Participating in Job site cleanup.
Maintaining clean work area.
Performing an Operational Risk Management Briefing for any task mastered to date.
Generating or adding to an Activity Hazard Analysis for any task mastered.
Contributing to the Risk Register for any defined feature of work mastered.
Terminate various manufacturers of copper termination blocks.
Successful Cable Technician Will have extensive experience with the installation, termination and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments.
Hospital installs a plus.
Technician should understand how improper installs can affect testing.
Technicians should have knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper install and termination procedures.
Technicians must have proven experience terminating cable on Patch Panels and Jacks at Work Area Outlet.
Technicians must have full Technicians Tool Set.
Cable Technicians need to be able to train and supervise apprentices in a team environment to facilitate installing cable from TRs to WAO's while following drawings and run lists to ensure cables are installed methodically and arranged in proper bundles at TR for ease of dressing and termination.
Cable technicians also need to be able to perform Quality assurance checks on their teams work ensuring cable install is performed within all applicable requirements.
Technicians with proven Fiber Optics experience are a plus.
3-4 years prior experience in commercial communications industry with a high school diploma or GED
Must possess Top Secret security clearance
High school diploma or GED are required
Must be 18 years of age
Must have reliable transportation to and from the jobsite
Lifting at least 50 pounds at one time.
Relocating a twelve-foot stepladder without assistance as required.
May use standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
Working at various heights up to 60 feet, climbing and maintaining balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
Walking, climbing, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls, and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
- This position may require ongoing or intermittent use of a company vehicle. Selected candidates must possess an acceptable driving record in accordance to our policy.
