About the Job

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for developing and producing one or more daily radio program(s) for BYUradio for a total of 10 finished hours* of live radio per week.

Essential Functions

1. Radio Program Development/Production

Manages the creation, development, and production of one or more BYUradio program(s). Functions include, but are not limited to:

Acquiring content - finding, creating and organizing content for one or more daily radio shows

Researching show topics

Working closely with show host to develop content

Writing scripts

Conducting interviews

Leading production team

Delivering finished shows to scheduling

Writing web descriptions

Keeping records

Establishes and maintains an environment that maximizes the effectiveness of radio host(s) and production team(s)

Bears responsibility for the overall quality control of productions consistent with creative vision and production plan

Creates production schedule, and coordinates usage/deployment of production facilities, production equipment and materials, technical resources and staff

2. Radio Program Direction

Develops the creative vision for the programs and plans scripts, guests and recording schedules

Directs in-studio and on-location programs

Manages production staff and hosts’ assignments

Manages program technical aspects, including sound design, music, and voice production

Collaborates with editors during post-production to finalize programs

May operate equipment such as mixers, microphones, sound board, recording and automation equipment

3. BYUradio Employee Supervision

Trains and supervises a student team of producers and operators in executing the shows

Leads by example and instruct clearly a team of 5 student employees

May supervise other non-student radio professionals

4. Marketing

Works with BYU Radio marketing to promote the shows on all available media, including web and social media

Creates regular blog posts, sound bites, and other show highlights used in promotions


Minimum education/experience required:

5 years professional experience in Radio, TV or other media development and production


Bachelor’s Degree in broadcast, film, communications, or related field AND 5 years of experience in media production and development in a major media market.

Someone with a sense for compelling content/what makes a good story

Skilled writer; ability to connect information in a way that makes sense & is entertaining

Strong editorial judgment in support of BYU aims and values, BYU Broadcasting’s programming mission, as well as solid artistic judgment

Ability to create programming of consistent quality

Leadership skills

Ability to give constructive feedback, inspire team and hold team members accountable

Ability to take direction

Self-starter, ability to work with little to no supervision

Team player

Strong people, communication, PR and negotiation skills

Organizational or project management skills

Discipline and attention to detail
