A radio controller operates radio equipment in order to communicate with ships, aircraft, mining crews, offshore oil rigs, logging camps and other remote operations. A radio controller turn controls or throw switches in order to activate power, adjust voice volume and modulation, and set transmitters on specified frequencies. A radio controller may be responsible for conducting periodic equipment inspections and routine tests in order to ensure that operations standards are met; and coordinating radio-related aspects of locating and contacting airplanes and ships that are missing or in distress. A radio controller examines and operates new equipment prior to installation in order to ensure that it performs properly. A radio controller reviews applicable regulations regarding radio communications, and reports violations. A radio controller sends, receives, and interprets coded messages. A radio controller sets up antennas and mobile communication units during military field exercises. A radio controller communicates with receiving operators in order to exchange transmission instructions. A radio controller determines and obtains bearings of sources from which signals originate, using direction-finding procedures and equipment.
A four-year college degree or equivalent work experience required for radio controller jobs. Two years of experience is also preferred for radio controller jobs. Communication skills are must for radio controller jobs. Radio production skills, including audio editing using Adobe Audition, are desirable for radio controller jobs.
