A radio jockey is the one who anchors programs in a radio station. He is the person with whom the public communicates and places a request for any particular song. Every radio jockey or RJ is associated with various responsibilities and tasks. His task is to entertain the listeners by playing a good collection songs and conveying information in a very attractive but simple way. Their job includes playing requests from listeners, interviewing guests, managing contests and also providing information on traffic, weather and current affairs. The nature of this job is extremely diversified and depends on the content of the radio program.

This profession requires presence of mind and lots of hard work in initial stages. One more important thing you require in this field is a good sense of humor. Usually youth is preferred in this kind of profession on the radio because they are full of energy and easily come up with new ideas.

Radio jockeying is a field that is entirely based on talent. Even though no formal education comes into use, a degree or at least high schooling is a pre-requisite. You are also preferred to be a linguist and should be well versed with at least three languages. A radio jockey is required to have a good or sweet voice and ability to modulate it for different occasions. He should pronounce accurately, should have clear diction and should be fluent in the language he is speaking. They should also give quick, spontaneous and witty responses and should have a down-to-earth attitude so that callers love calling and chatting with them.

To be successful one should also have the ability to twist and turn their speech according to the situation. A RJ should stay updated and keep track of all the happenings in and around the city so that they sound different each time they conduct the show. Qualities like mimicry and local dialects help a Radio Jockey to entertain the listeners to a great extent. Once you get through the job you usually get two months of in-house training in CD players to Digital Audio Technology. Aside from giving you training, the company assumes that you hear a lot of radio and you know how different RJs work in their stations.

Generally companies prefer youth having 2-3 years of experience so that they do not have to spend much in training them. On having experience, they become more confident and talking to callers becomes relatively easier. RJs are very much in demand as lots of private FM companies are coming up in the market. Being an RJ you can also earn by doing commercials i.e. by doing voice-overs for radio advertisements.

This job is not 9 to 6 job; you will only have to work around 3-4 hours per day but the skill it requires makes it equally tough. This is surely not an easy job but its nature makes it interesting and attractive to the youth.
